Bishop Cosin wished to define the hours at which it was to be said within certain limits, by adding to “a convenient time before he begin,” “which may be any hour between six and ten of the clock in the morning, or between two and six of the clock in the evening” and although his alteration was not adopted, it serves to show us what were then considered the canonical limits of the times for Mattins and Evensong.

Collect. (Green Book)
GRANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that we, who here observe the heavenly birthday of the Mother of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, may in such wise rejoice in her yearly festival, that we may learn to follow rightly the example of her devotion; through the samc thy Son. Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
First Evensong: Cant 2:1-5 & Rev 12:1-6
Mattins: Cant 2:1-6 & Luke 11:27-28
Second Evensong: Cant 2:10-17 & Luke 1:41-45
Collect (Western Rite)
WE beseech thee, O Lord, let us be continually aided by the sacred feast. of this day, whereon the holy Mother of God underwent death in this world, and yet could not be holden by the chains of death: who did bring forth thy Son our Lord. Who liveth.
Heritage Edition

I purchased a Heritage Edition Prayer Book and Bible. (Like I need more BCPs and KJVs, and, yes, for my birthday). This is one of the best starter BCPs – with KJV! I like that I can take just one book everywhere. All I need is here. Very nice size! The KJV font is a little small but I can read when I remember to put on my glasses.
Yes, I have a 1928 Deposited Book (and it has been my constant companion). But this might be better!!! Very nice hand-feel!!! And the cost is a quarter of the 1928 with 1922 Lectionary.

The best I have seen!!!! Section on Fasts is excellent, methinks.
transfiguration of the Lord

Today is the great feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ. I wish all of you to be spiritually transfigured and to begin a new life in Christ. Those who fulfill the commandments of the Lord according to their strength even here on earth pass from strength to strength. But those who are counted worthy to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven will pass already from glory to glory.

And, today, is my birthday! So happy birthday to me.
Didache on fasting
But let not your fasts be with the hypocrites; for they fast on the second and fifth day of the week; but fast on the fourth day and the Preparation (Friday).
Chapter 8
The Book of Common Prayer has guidelines for fasting – the benchmark!?
mattins and evensong
… Wherefore, except Vespers and Nocturns, there are no public services among them in the day except on Saturday and Sunday, when they meet together at the third hour for the purpose of Holy Communion.
Institutes (Book III)
bcp ascetics?
So, here is my reworking of John Cosins’ Precepts:
- To use a liturgical calender
- To fast
- To use an approved BCP (ie: no extras!)
- To say Morning and Evening Prayer
- To receive Holy Communion (at least once a year)
- To seek the advice (counsel) of a spiritual elder

Russia and the BCP
I. There is nothing in the actual contents of “Daily Morning and Evening Prayer,” together with the collects, which change according to the season, which is open to any particular objection on the positive side from the Orthodox point of view, unless the addition of the Filioque to the Creed is taken into account. But at the same time, while the recourse in prayer to the Most Holy Mother of God, to the Angel Hosts, and to the illustrious saints, the glorification and invocation of them, forms an essential part of Orthodox and Catholic worship, these things are entirely foreign to Anglican worship. It is absolutely necessary that there should be introduced into this worship some such prayers (or hymns) in one or another form and degree.

A Table of Fast and Abstinence
Strict Fast Days
Ash Wednesday Good Friday
Wednesdays and Fridays are days of abstinence throughout the year.
Fast Periods During the Year:
- Advent
- The Forty Days of Lent
- The Ember Days at the four seasons, being the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after the First Sunday in Lent, the Feast of Pentecost, September 14, and December 13.
The Wednesdays and Fridays that fall during a fast period are considered days of fast and abstinence.
Note: There is no fast or abstinence of any kind from Christmas Day to the eve of Epiphany, or from Easter to the following Sunday.
Abstinence means to avoid eating certain kinds of food; e.g., flesh meat, dairy products.
Fasting means to reduce the amount of food eaten, generally to one and one-half meals per day.
